About the Artist

Elaine M Goodwin is an English artist of international renown exhibiting regularly world-wide. She works exclusively in the art of mosaic, using the traditional materials of Rome and Byzantium – marble, gold and glass to create abstract icons of light.

Her education was in the Far East and Europe, and from an early age she developed a passion for drawing. She recalls the light from the lanterns of the little junk boats of Hong Kong reflecting in the water – a memory which began a strong line of enquiry into how we comprehend the visual play of light.

After graduating from Exeter College of Art & Design she developed an interest in mosaic. The knowledge she acquired she put into six books including an Encyclopaedia of Mosaic. In 2010 she was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Exeter for her outstanding contribution to art. She is a member of the famed Chelsea Arts Club.

In the spring of 2016 she gave up her studio homes in Exeter, England and Marrakech, Morocco, and became a resident of the village of Couches, in Burgundy. This dramatic move began after seeing a marvellous house there where she could have her home, a studio and open a gallery for her work.

She says ‘Couches is the secret centre of Europe…surrounded by vineyards including those of the Côte D’Or. It is protected by wide ever changing skies and immersed in the warmth of its inhabitants.’

Her work is a celebration of life. Her continual questioning about the wonders of life, finding rational explanations in working with materials of reflected light, have labelled her a contemporary existentialist.

About the Gallery

The gallery is beautiful – large and luminous, with a bespoke entrance way for the visiting public. It is illuminated by the changing Burgundian light during the day and spotlighting in the evening. It is a new gallery specially designed to exhibit the light filled works of Elaine M Goodwin.

The gallery gives a warm welcome to all visitors, the curious and the conoscenti.

During the first weekend of November each year Elaine will host an Open Door – Portes Overtes – exhibiting her work annually under differing themes, these will include – light – the vine – the human form – the sea. These solo exhibitions will run for five to six months.

The current and first exhibition is titled ‘Icons of Light’ – Icônes de Lumière. It features over forty works of varying sizes and prices to suit every purse! Elaine proposes to offer two exhibitions a year both in the autumn and in the summer – where she will invite an artist to exhibit with her under a theme.

The summer exhibition will feature the work of the well known and loved painter from Burgundy, Jean Claude Bligny. He was born in Couches and has a great affection for the area. Elaine and he will exhibit together under the title ‘Wine and the Divine’ – Vin et Divin. The exhibition will feature over twenty new works on this theme.

A new and comprehensive book on Bligny wil be launched at the exhibiton vernissage and signed copies will be available throughout. We look forward to meeting you…
