About the Artist

Elaine M Goodwin is an English artist of international renown exhibiting regularly world-wide. She works exclusively in the art of mosaic, using the traditional materials of Rome and Byzantium – marble, gold and glass to create abstract icons of light.

Her education was in the Far East and Europe, and from an early age she developed a passion for drawing. She recalls the light from the lanterns of the little junk boats of Hong Kong reflecting in the water – a memory which began a strong line of enquiry into how we comprehend the visual play of light.

After graduating from Exeter College of Art & Design she developed an interest in mosaic. The knowledge she acquired she put into six books including an Encyclopaedia of Mosaic. In 2010 she was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Exeter for her outstanding contribution to art. She is a member of the famed Chelsea Arts Club.

In the spring of 2016 she gave up her studio homes in Exeter, England and Marrakech, Morocco, and became a resident of the village of Couches, in Burgundy. This dramatic move began after seeing a marvellous house there where she could have her home, a studio and open a gallery for her work.

She says ‘Couches is the secret centre of Europe…surrounded by vineyards including those of the Côte D’Or. It is protected by wide ever changing skies and immersed in the warmth of its inhabitants.’

Her work is a celebration of life. Her continual questioning about the wonders of life, finding rational explanations in working with materials of reflected light, have labelled her a contemporary existentialist.

About the Gallery

The gallery is beautiful – large and luminous, with a bespoke entrance way for the visiting public. It is illuminated by the changing Burgundian light during the day and spotlighting in the evening. It is a new gallery specially designed to exhibit the light filled works of Elaine M Goodwin.

The gallery gives a warm welcome to all visitors, the curious and the conoscenti.

During the first weekend of November each year Elaine will host an Open Door / Portes Overtes, where the public is invited in to meet her and view her work. The gallery shows two exhibitions a year; a solo one of Elaine’s work in the autumn and another in the summer, where she will invite an artist or artists to exhibit with her under a theme.

The current exhibition of invited artists is a very exciting one for the gallery. The title is Take Five. and the exhibition which opened on June 2 runs until October 17 2018. It features well known mosaic maestros of the medium of mosaic. Lucio Orsoni from Venice, Italy;Edda Mally from Vienna, Austria, Dugald MacInnes from Glasgow, Scotland, Annik Chaima from the Loire region of France and Elaine herself. All the artists present new works some as three dimensional and some as wall hung works.

The November exhibition for 2018 is a departure from Elaine’s solo exhibition. Called Ouverture Marocaine it features work that Elaine created in Morocco when she lived there for part of the year during 2001-2016. The work reflects the colour and vibrancy of living in the old medina of the city of Marrakech. She has invited the well known painter and calligrapher Mohamed Abaoubida from Marrakech to exhibit in collaboration with her.

The exhibition will open on Saturday 3rd November and run until the end of May 2019 One Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4 November the gallery is holding an Open Door / Portes Ouverte

All are very welcome. The gallery is open from 10.00 am – 6.00 pm

The current exhibition is a very exciting one.
The title is Ouverture Marocaine and features work Elaine did in the atelier of her beautiful riad in the heart of Marrakech from 2001 – 2016.
The tradtional riad was open to the skies with a central fountain and rhythmically arched terraces and inspired Elaine in a new way of looking at life and added colour to her muted silvery
English palette. The work in the exhibition reflects the colour and vibrancy of living in the old medina of the city of Marrakech. Using the image of the  door, il bab and the window, the chemassiats, Elaine reflects and explores both openings, the physical and metaphysical. The door evoking a ‘passing through’ from one situation into another and the window evoking a ‘looking through’.
She has invited the well known painter and calligrapher Mohamed Abaoubida from Marrakech to exhibit in collaboration with her. His lyrical watercolour work delights the eye and lifts the spirit. The exhibition opened on Saturday 3rd November and runs untilMay 2019.
All are very welcome.
